Different types of pool filters methods and how do they work?

What are the different types of swimming pool filters methods and how do they work? How do I clean my filter? There are three basic types of Filters: Sand,Diatomacous Earth (DE),and Cartridge. Your pressure gauge is a good indicator of when you need to clean your filter. If it reaches 5-8 PSI above the initial systems starting pressure,itís time to clean!…

Sand Filter SystemsWater passes through a bed of sand inside your filter tank, where small particles in pool water are trapped and removed returning clean water back into the pool. Sand filters are the most popular because they are easy to operate and maintain. To clean the filter, turn the pump off then rotate your filter’s multiport valve from “Filter” to the “Backwash” position and then turn the pump back on. This forces water through the standpipe and into the bed of sand, churning up the sand and loosening the trapped waste and flushing it out your backwash hose or pipe. Pay attention to your site glassâ ¦at first the water will be dirtyâ ¦after 3-5 minutes, the water will clear. You must then turn the pump off, rotate the multiport valve to “Rinse” and then turn the pump on again. This will rinse dirt out of the valve. After two minutes, turn the pump off again and rotate the valve to “Filter”. Turn the pump back on and you are in normal operating mode. Your sand will eventually lose it’s filtration effectiveness and will need to be changed. We recommend you change your sand every 3-5 years depending on your location and your typical bather load.

Cartridge FilterSystemsWater passes through the cartridge element inside your filter, contained in a filter tank similar to the D.E. filter which traps small particles and debris. These systems are also relatively easy to use. When the pressure gauge reads that the cartridge is dirty,(make note of your “Clean Pressure” â the pressure reading immediately after cleaning your filter and returning it to normal operating mode) simply remove the tank body and then the dirty cartridge and clean it with a garden hose or soak the cartridge in cartridge cleaner, then hose down the cartridge.
Diatomaceous Earth Filter Systems (D.E.)Water passes through a grid coated with an organic powder-like substance to trap small particles and debris. Although this type of filter system is capable of trapping smaller particles than a sand filter,it requires more maintenance. When the D.E. gets dirty it has to be cleaned from the grids and then new D.E. powder is added through making a slurry and adding the D.E. into the skimmer with the system running.
